Undergraduate Science Education Scholar (SEDS) Program
Former TTU/HHMI Science Education and Research Fellow, Robin Henne, teaches the proper use of microscopes to her students at Frenship High School during student teaching.
Purpose
The TTU/HHMI Science Education Scholar Program is a unique opportunity for science education students to enhance their preparation to become science teachers by participating in:
- the development and distribution of pre-college science education materials;
- the design and organization of in-service workshops for teachers and other pre-college outreach activities; and
- a summer research project.
Program Description
The TTU/HHMI Science Education Scholar Program is an integral part of the overall TTU/HHMI Program, which also supports the research activities of life sciences majors who work in faculty research laboratories. The Science Education Scholars will participate in an orientation and training session together with the Research Scholars during the summer. The Fellows will then work with College of Education and TTU/HHMI Personnel to organize in-service workshops that are planned for the summer, will attend those workshops, and will engage in training and planning with other TTU/HHMI Pre-College Outreach Programs, such as Shake Hands With Your Future classes along with Science, It’s a Girl Thing summer camp. During the academic year, the Science Education Scholars will participate in a variety of pre-college outreach activities, will work together in the pre-college teaching experience program for TTU biology GTAC students, and will be required to work 15 – 20 hours a week.
Scholars are paid hourly (currently $7.16 per hour) and can work a maximum of 40 hours a week during the summer and at least 15 and up to 20 hours a week during the regular semesters. The program does not provide room and board during the summer or academic year. It does not pay tuition and fees. The award does not qualify a student for in-state tuition.
