Public School Teacher
I taught 7th grade honors classes in life science to students at Cavazos Jr. High, Lubbock, TX, starting immediately after my graduation from TTU in August, 1996...and I found that teaching a subject really is the best way to learn it.
Bench Scientist
I worked as a lab technician in DoD funded perchlorate studies at TTU, where I was introduced to Good Laboratory Practices, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control. I became fascinated with generating technical reports, forms, standard operating procedures, and organization of information in general. It seemed like a good mixture of science and art, which is most rewarding for me.
Graduate Student
After searching for a great program in technical writing, I was extremely happy to find the Technical Communications program in TTU's Department of English. This program has given me the space and flexibility to bridge Humanities and Science in my work as a graduate student, and has shown me how to do so more effectively. My classes have exposed me to post-modern philosophers like Michel Foucault with his ideas about power and objectivity, and to the rhetoric behind science, both of which have helped me to become a better reader, writer, observer, and especially, a better communicator of science.
